AM, PM and AM/PM are next to all of the school bus routes to signify what time of the day they run
AM - The school bus route ONLY runs in the morning (one-way)
PM - The school bus route ONLY runs in the afternoon (one-way)
AM/PM - The school bus route runs both in the morning and afternoon (both ways)
These have been put next to all of the school bus routes because some are only one-way routes, while most run both ways.
Please note that some bus routes may only go in one direction, even though there is/are another/other bus route(s) (one-way or not) which goes back in the general direction of the aforementioned route(s). This does not mean that these routes are exactly the same. If they were the same, they would be just the same route number with 'AM/PM' next to it. The example below will clarify the above:
For example, take Westlake Boys High School.
Route 074 - Windy Ridge to Westlake Schools via Hillcrest and Northcote (AM/PM) runs the same route in the morning and afternoon.
However, take route 041 - Torbay to Westlake Schools via Browns Bay, Beach Rd, Mairangi Bay, East Coast Rd and Forrest Hill Rd (AM) for instance. It is a one-way route, as it only operates in the one direction in the morning. If you lived in Torbay and needed to get back there through a school bus after school, you'd take the 025 - Westlake Schools to Torbay via Forrest Hill Rd, East Coast Rd, Northcross and Torbay Heights (PM) bus route. See how route 025 is a different route to 041? This is because it doesn't travel in the same direction back to Torbay as route 041. If it did, route 041 would just become an AM/PM route. It is called route 025 because it travels in a slightly different direction back to Torbay, compared to 041 [going to WBHS]. Route 025 still terminates in the Torbay area, which is why you're still able catch that bus route after school, since route 041 doesn't operate in the afternoon. This can also be said the same about Forrest Hill Rd and East Coast Rd as they are listed on both bus routes.
The above example is just to show how you would get back to where you came from in the morning on a PM-only bus because the bus you have to take only runs as an AM route and is the same anywhere within the Auckland Boundary Lines.
Most bus routes you'll come across in Auckland will have 3 characters in them (e.g. 321 or 14T). However, some bus routes will only have 2 characters in them (e.g. 30 or 75) - with exceptions to Link and Northern Express Services. These bus routes are frequent services which run every 15 minutes or less. There are about 45 of them in Auckland (including Link and Northern Express Services).
To recap, a frequent bus route can be identified by having 2 characters in its route number (e.g. 30 or 75) - with exceptions to Link and Northern Express Services.
A normal half-hourly and later bus route can be identified by having 3 characters in its route number (e.g. 321 or 14T).
*There are some more exceptions to FREQUENT services though, which is answered below.
If you have noticed that some bus route numbers have 2 numbers (making it frequent) but also an affix (a letter) at the end, causing it to be 3 characters (making it half-hourly and later), it is still a frequent bus route. Here's why:
About 22 of the frequent bus routes in Auckland have route number similar to this example: 14T/W or 25B/L.
Individually, routes like the 14T on their own are half-hourly or later services. But when they are combined, like the 14T/W, together they make a frequent service because they share the same route for the majority of their journeys and alternate between each other's timetables. If you ignore the affixes (letters) on the end of these bus routes, you will notice the route has just 2 numbers in it. That's how they're classified as frequent bus routes. N.B. You may notice that routes like the 14T/W are sometimes classified just as the 14. This is because the two routes make up one frequent route.
To recap, routes like the 24B/R/W make up a frequent service as they share the same route for the majority of their journeys and alternate between each other's timetables - so taking any of these services [to a certain point on the route] will count as taking a frequent service (24). But when you split them up individually, like the 24R, that bus route alone then becomes a half-hourly or later service because it has 3 characters in it. Still, the majority of the frequent bus routes in Auckland just have 2 numbers in their route number because the route doesn't split off (just the one route) - like the 75 or 30. You can tell because there is no affix (letter) at the end of these bus route numbers.
Yes, they are. For the vast majority of bus routes in Auckland, they are numbered (sometimes with letters) - i.e. 321 or 75 or 30 and 11T/W or 25B/L. The numbers and letters correspond to the area that particular route runs through and even the type of route (explained later).
Please be aware that some bus routes which have only letters in them (i.e. CTY) are all frequent routes (as explained in another section on this page) and may be short for words/route names (i.e. CityLink), which say the general area they service (i.e. the CityLink services the city zone).
For that vast majority of bus routes which are numbered, the prefix of those numbers tells which fare zone that particular bus route runs through. The infix tells what bus routes run alongside that particular one. The suffix is either a number or letter (for most bus routes). If it is a number, it is just assigned to that route in accordance with other routes. If it is a letter, it is assigned to that route to show what the general direction that route will go towards - like a road or area (i.e. the 11T splits off to Triangle Rd and the 11W splits off to Waimumu Rd). Sometimes, there will be a second infix (which will always be a digit with the prefix and first infix) before the suffix letter. This is the case with express services (i.e. 309X). Do take into account that a handful of bus routes do not have infixes as they have just 2 digits in them (because they are frequent routes) - i.e. 75 or 30. In situations like these, the prefix also counts as the infix at the same time.
Below is a list which corresponds each prefix and infix (*where possible) to each fare zone (although some bus routes from other fare zones travel through other ones, the fare zones which are corresponded to each prefix are home to that prefix (the majority of a particular prefix is based in that zone):
PREFIX (AND SUFFIX*): FARE ZONE:
9 9 # Warkworth
9 8 # Hibiscus Coast
1 2 # Helensville
1 2 # Huapai
8 # # Upper North Shore
8+9 # # Lower North Shore
5 0 # Waiheke
1 # # Waitakere
1 0 # City
1+2+3+7 # # Isthmus
3+7 # # Manukau North
7 3 # Beachlands
3 # # Manukau South
3 9 # Franklin
6 # # Reserved for Crosstown (Isthmus) bus routes only
0+4## Reserved for SCHOOL bus routes only
2+5+8## Some are reserved for SCHOOL bus routes only
Here are some examples:
321 (Middlemore to Britomart via Hospitals) - the 3 (prefix) signifies that this particular bus route travels through the Isthmus and Manukau fare zones for the majority of its trip. The 2 (infix) signifies that this particular bus route travels alongside similar routes, in this case, in the Otahuhu area - i.e. 323, 324, 325 and 326. The 1 (suffix) is just to group the bus route along with the other ones (which were mentioned just before).
997 (Warkworth to Warkworth via Matakana, Point Wells and Omaha) - the 9 (prefix) and the other 9 (infix) signifies that this particular bus route travels through the Warkworth fare zone for the whole of its trip. That 9 (infix) also signifies that this particular bus route travels alongside similar routes, in this case, in the Warkworth and Kowhai Coast area - i.e 995, 996 and 998. The 7 (suffix) is just to group the bus route along with the other ones (which were mentioned just before).
132X (Te Atatu Peninsula to City Centre EXPRESS) - the 1 (prefix) signifies that this particular bus route travels through the Waitakere and Isthmus fare zones for the majority of its trip. The 3 (first infix) signifies that this particular bus route travels alongside similar routes, in this case, in the Te Atatu area - i.e. 131, 132, 133, 133X, 134 and 138 - as well as in the Isthmus area - i.e. 133, 133X and 134. The 2 (second infix) is just to group the bus route along with the other ones (which were mentioned just before). The X (suffix) is to signify that this particular bus route is an express.
70 (Botany to Britomart) - the 7 (prefix) signifies that this particular bus route travels through the Isthmus and Manukau North fare zones for the majority of its trip. The 0 (prefix) signifies that this particular bus route travels alongside similar routes, in this case, in the Isthmus area - i.e. 72X, 75 and 751 - as well as in the East Auckland area - i.e. 711, 712, 72C, 72M and 72X. The 0 (prefix) is also just to group the bus route along with the other ones (which were mentioned just before)
399 (Port Waikato to Pukekohe Station) - the 3 (prefix) and the 9 (infix) signifies that this particular bus route travels through the Franklin fare zone for the whole of its trip. That 9 (infix) also signifies that this particular bus route travels alongside similar routes, in this case, in the Pukekohe area - i.e. 391, 392, 393, 394 and 396. The 9 (suffix) is just to group the bus route along with the other ones (which were mentioned just before).
66 (Pt Chevalier Beach to Sylvia Park) - the 6 (prefix) signifies that this particular bus route travels through the Isthmus and fare zone for the whole of its trip because it is a crosstown route. Because this bus route is a crosstown route, it does not travel alongside similar routes - due to no other crosstown route having 6 as its infix and/or suffix. The 6 (prefix) is just to group this crosstown bus route.
67A (New Lynn to Otahuhu) - the 6 (prefix) signifies that this particular bus route travels through the Isthmus and fare zone for the whole of its trip because it is a crosstown route. Because this bus route is a crosstown route, it does not travel alongside similar routes - due to no other crosstown route having 7 as its infix. The A (prefix) is just to group this crosstown bus route with the 7.
Below is the fare zone map for the AT Metro Network, which includes the prefixes and some infixes for the bus routes in those zones - This map isn't the latest version, but is still being used on this website, as it better demonstrates the zones in the Auckland region where the different prefixes are used:
Hi, I'm Isaac, the website's creator. I'd like to say thank you for taking the time to read this part of the page!
It all started when I was trying to find some information about my local bus routes on the Auckland Transport website. Of course, I couldn't find a bus route map - which was one of the main things I was trying to find. Eventually after some Googling, I was able to find them - Phew! However, annoyingly, I had to Google every single bus route individually which got quite frustrating and time-consuming. That was when the idea of having one website for all of Auckland's bus route maps hit me. So, after hours and hours of work, I was able to build this website - the very one you are on right now! In a nutshell, the purpose of this website is to make it quick and easy for anyone to view Auckland's bus route maps without having to go through the struggle of digging through links of pages for just for a map or two!
I use this website almost every day because it helps me find bus routes around areas I'll be travelling to. Now that you've read my story, I hope you enjoy using this free website for your benefit to make it that little bit easier finding your way around Auckland!
Happy travels,
Isaac ☺
